All About The City of Pembroke Pines FL

Pembroke Pines is a popular city in the southern part of Broward County, Florida, U.S. Located 22 miles (35 km) north of Miami. As of 2019, the city’s population was estimated to be 173, 591, an increase from 154, 750 according to the 2010 census. Ft. Lauderdale is the most populated city, followed by Pembroke Pines, which is the 11th-most populous in the state of Florida. The city was officially incorporated in mid-January 1960 and obtained its name from the initiative of Sir Edward J. Reed who belonged to Britain’s Parliament for the city from 1874 to 1880.

A road through one of the Pembroke Pines tracts later came to be referred to as Pembroke Road. During the city’s incorporation, Walter Smith Kipnis, who later served as the first mayor of the city, came up with the name Pembroke Pines due to the pine trees that grew near Pembroke Road. American Indians were the first to inhabit the area and they originally appeared approximately 4, 000 years ago.

History of Pembroke Pines

The town began as agricultural land inhabited by dairy farms and later grew after the conclusion of World War II when war veterans were retiring. One of the initial homes to be set up in the city belonged to Kipnis, the first mayor, and was constructed in 1956. First, it started as a village, the “Village of Pembroke Pines” before it was fully incorporated into a village three years after Kipnis’s home was built. The incorporation was widely contested by builders and a legal battle followed regarding the new municipality’s boundaries. Some of the initial city services were introduced in the 1960s, including the setting up of the initial fire department building close to North Perry Airport.
