Your eyes are one of the most important but sensitive parts of your body. Regular eye care and checkups are an absolute must to ensure eye health. Eye examinations can detect a number ailments, allowing for early detection and treatment. Here are just some of the conditions an eye exam can detect.
What An Eye Examination Tests For
- Glaucoma: Affects 3 million people a year in the United States. It is a condition that slowly reduces your sight until it is completely lost. Despite its damaging results if left untreated, glaucoma is easily treated. Regular eye exams after the age of 40 allow you to detect glaucoma when it's in its early phase and before any major damage has been done to the optic nerve. Once advanced testing has confirmed you have glaucoma, it can be treated with medication and, if required, surgery. Learn more about Glaucoma
- Color Blindness: Characterized by the inability to see certain parts of the color spectrum. Red-green colorblindness is the most common variation but blue-yellow colorblindness also exists. Often an inherited non-degenerative condition, loss of color sight in adulthood can be a sign of other ailments. No matter what the causes, advancements in treatment are available, including specialized contact lenses to restore full sight of the color spectrum.
Retinal Disorders: The eye is a delicate organ and damage to the retina can be caused by physical damage, bright lights and diseases. Damage to the retina can be very severe and ailments you can suffer include retinal detachment, hemorrhaging and piercing of the eye by foreign objects. During the course of a full eye exam your retina will be carefully examined and photographed using the latest in technology. This allows for detection and treatment of conditions such as degeneration and illness.- Eye Allergies: Allergies are one of the most common ailments you can have. Allergies can be seasonal or year round and affect young and old alike. If you have allergies, you are no doubt familiar with the negative impact they have on daily activities. Eye allergies are especially bothersome, causing redness, itching and tears. Once an allergy has been confirmed, eye drops can help reduce and control your symptoms.
