All About North Perry Airport in Pembroke Pines
North Perry Airport (ICAO: KHWO, FAA LID: HWO, IATA: HWO, ICAO: KHWO) in Pembroke Pines City is an airport that is (8km) 5 miles western of central business district of Hollywood. This public airport in Broward County, Florida, U.S. is property of Broward County Aviation Department. The general aviation airport is dedicated to private as well as light business aircraft venture.
In 1943, the United States Navy bought 259 ha (640 acres) of land from a dairy farmer called Henry D. Perry, for a flight coaching field between Pembroke Road and Hollywood Boulevard. It provided additional support to the main naval air station called NAS Miami. It came to be known as North Perry Field. South Perry Field also existed and it was in southeast of North Perry (the Florida Turnpike goes through this area today). South Perry was initially a grass field with neither structures nor facilities meant for overflow of North Perry.
It remained inactive until 1950 when Broward County acquired it and turned it into a civilian airport. It was reformed to serve small aircraft as an advertisement station for blimps and U.S. Coast Guard helicopters to train search & rescue skills. In 2005, during Hurricane Wilma, the amenity suffered small damage. Florida Department of Transportation named North Perry Airport the 2008 “General Aviation Airport of the Year”.
North Perry General Aviation Airport
North Perry is exclusively dedicated to private as well as business light-plane activity as a general aviation airport. There are 8 Flight Schools currently at North Perry Airport, at least 40 aviation businesses and 4 Fixed Based Operators (FBOs) 160 T-Hangers. In 2018, North Perry's website noted that there were more than 250,000 operations in financial year 2018.
North Perry is a preferred general aviation reliever airport that plays a key role in congestion reduction at Miami International airport and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood. At HWO, there are almost 400 based aircraft. For light general aviation planes that weigh less than 12,500lbs, the airfield provides four runways.
The North Perry Airport Master Plan
Broward County Aviation Department (BCAD) does regular reviews of airport operations master plan. The aim of the plan is to identify future developments, evaluate requirements of the community and market, capital improvements, and balance the environmental, economic and social influence as stipulated by the Federal Aviation Administration. The FAA requires the frequent update of airport master plans, at least once every 5-10 years or as required in order to verify compatibility of the airport with the trends of the aviation industry and developments of local area. The Master Plan Update (MPU) of the airport was finished according to the federal and state guidelines that are within FAA Advisory Circular 150/5070-68B, the foot guidebook for Airport Master Planning, and Airport Master Plans. These guidelines comprise the required study elements in order to start a detailed airport plan that matches the aviation request for a 20+ year planning time in an affordable, incremental and demand-driven manner. MPU development was steered by specific goals or objectives.
The MPU contains a comprehensive assessment of airport properties. These properties comprise the roadways, tenant facilities, airfield, and other support facilities like the traffic control tower and BCAD administration and maintenance. Future airport infrastructure and facility requirements are triggered by increasing tenant development, aeronautical activity, and replacement of infrastructure and aging facilities. To estimate future facility development requirements and determine the order of future development, it was important to forecast airport activity and submit it to the FAA to enable them to review and approve.
North Perry is a truly admirable aviation reliever airport that has played a major role in decongesting other airports like Miami International Airport and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood. HWO, for instance, has several based aircraft and as a general aviation airport, the public airport is dedicated exclusively to private and business activity. Concessionaires offer numerous services to the flying public. Discover Paradise Cove Water Park.
